Artist Information

Sian Bonnell studied sculpture at Chelsea School of Art and Fine Art at Northumbria University. Her work exists within a paradoxical space that encompasses sculpture, performance, the imagination and the absurd to create fictions; made manifest with photography.

Awarded an Honorary Fellowship at the Royal Photographic Society in 2010, the following year she was awarded the Photoworks Senior Research Fellowship at the British School at Rome. Her images have been exhibited and published widely, most recently at the Victoria & Albert Museum in London throughout 2015 in A History of Photography: Series and Sequences.

TRACE, the curation and publishing project, she ran from her home in Dorset, was established by Bonnell in 1999. Since 2014 Bonnell has curated an ongoing series of exhibitions that showcase graduate photography from the UK to new Chinese audiences at Pingyao International Photography Festival, held annually in China. She has also published many artist books under the imprint TRACE Editions including Wild Track the first book of poetry by Mark Haworth-Booth.

Solo exhibitions of her work include from an elsewhere unknown, Ffotogallery Turner House, National Touring Exhibition, Wales (2004), Everyday Dada, Galerie Image, Aarhus, Denmark (2006), and When the Domestic Meets the Wild, Fotográphica Internationale Bogotá Biennial, Colombia (2013.

Group shows include Seeing Things: Photographing Objects 1850-2001, (2002), V&A, London; The Image Wrought, Harry Ransom Center, Austin, Texas, USA (2006), Fountains and Drains, The Sainsbury Gallery, British School at Rome (2011) and Dream Home, Pingyao International Photography Festival, China (2015).

Works are held in public and corporate collections including The V&A, London; The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, Texas, USA; The Harry Ransom Center, Austin, Texas, USA and The Bibliotheque.
