Lives & works: Brighton, UK.
Photographer Murray Ballard was born in Brighton in 1983. He graduated from the University of Brighton in 2007 and in 2008 was selected for Fresh Faced and Wild Eyed, the annual showcase of work by the most promising recent graduates at The Photographers’ Gallery in London. In 2011 the British Journal of Photography acknowledged Ballard as an emerging photographer of note following his debut Impressions Gallery solo show, The Prospect of Immortality: a series of photographic works after several years investigation into cryonics, inspired by Robert Ettinger’s 1962 book of the same name that gave birth to the idea of ‘cryonics’, or ‘the process of freezing a human body after death, in the hope that scientific advances might one day restore life’.
The exhibition, The Prospect of Immortality, toured to the Northern Gallery for Contemporary Art, Sunderland, as part of the exhibition Moral Holiday in 2012, followed by the Centro Cultural de Espana in Mexico City for the Transitio_mx 05 festival of 2013. Most recently The Prospect of Immortality was produced as a book and was shown at Format International Photography Festival in Derby, UK, as part of the exhibition Beyond Evidence: an incomplete narratology of photographic truths.
Ballard’s exhibitions also include Lost in Transit, at Vyner Street Gallery, London (2009); The World in London, curated by The Photographers’ Gallery, London, (2012); Beyond Evidence: an incomplete narratology of photographic truths, Format Festival, at Quad, Derby (2015).
Ballard’s photographs have been published in numerous magazines and newspapers including: Esquire, Financial Times, GEO, GQ, The Guardian, The Independent, The Telegraph and Wired, as well as the photography journals: 6 Mois, Dummy, The British Journal of Photography, HotShoe and Professional Photography.
